Recent Sales
PSA 3 examples have recently sold for $450-$550. PSA 5 examples range from $1,200 to $1,500. Raw copies in similar condition fluctuate between $300 and $500 depending on surface integrity.
Condition Details
Visible rounding and softening on all four corners. Bottom edge shows significant white wear/chipping. The centering appears slightly shifted to the left and bottom. Surface shows typical vintage aging; note that the 'ROOKIE CARD' text is on the plastic holder, not the card itself.
Grading Recommendation
Highly Recommended. Despite the label on the holder incorrectly calling it a 'Rookie Card' (Mantle's rookie year was 1951/52), any original 1958 Mickey Mantle All-Star card is valuable. Professional grading (PSA or SGC) will authenticate the card and protect its value, as there is a significant price gap between raw and authenticated copies.
Card Description
Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees shown in a full-body follow-through batting pose. He is wearing his classic away grays. The background features a red field with white stars, denoting the Sport Magazine All-Star Selection theme. The bottom yellow banner lists him as Mickey Mantle, Center Field, American League.
Notable Features
Hall of Fame player. High-number card (#487 in the 1958 set). Part of the iconic first Topps All-Star multi-card subset. Features the 'Sport Magazine' branding logo in the top left corner.
Authentication Notes
The card exhibits correct color saturation and font characteristics for the 1958 Topps print run. The card stock shows appropriate age-related toning. Verify the 'dot pattern' print under a jeweler's loupe to ensure it is not a modern laser-printed reproduction.
